Listen to Hamar's inventive take on The Beatles' "Julia"
A year ago, bassist Jon Hamar issued one of our favorite CD's of the last several years. Called "Hereafter" it contains thoughtful, haunting covers — including The Beatles "Julia" and Piazolla's "Todo Fue"— in a variety of styles and musical genres as well as wonderful originals. While we have had the privilege of hearing Jon play frequently as a sideman, by accidents of timing & bad luck, we've never had Jon lead his own group here.
Until Now. We are pleased that we have arranged with Jon to play with his Trio at The Seasons. And you will be pleased with what may be the cleanest bass line, and most thoughtful conception of a musical experience that you have had.
Jon Hamar is an adjunct faculty in bass studies at Central Washington University, teaching both jazz and classical — has already influenced a new generation of musicians like Isaac Castillo whose clean bass line and elegant understatement was on display with Hal Weary at Thankgiving. Jon is also an in-demand bass player in the Seattle jazz scene.
His Trio is is no less distiguished.
Dawn Clement has appeared at The Seasons with her own trio plus trombonist Julian Priester. She is seen as one of the best pianists and bandleaders in the northwest. She has performed with such notables as: Nancy King, Ingrid Jensen, Hadley Caliman, John Clayton, Mercer Ellington, Mark Dresser, Jay Clayton and Pharaoh Sanders.
She currently has three cd's out under her own name and has been touring with her latest album entitled "break" (Conduit Records).
After her 2nd CD, Alexander Stern of AllAboutJazz.com wrote: " If Dawn Clement were a man, I’m sure Jazz Times would be proclaiming her the next Keith Jarrett or Chick Corea right now."
Byron Vannoy has performed and recorded with many internationally known musicians such as Julian Priester, Herbie Hancock, Randy Brecker, Tom Scott, Ray Vega, Greg Adams, Ernestine Anderson, Ishmael Wadada Leo Smith, Vinnie Golia, Jim Knapp, and Hadley Caliman. In addition, he has recorded for nationally broadcast television programs as well as radio spots for the BBC. He was 2002 Earshot Award winner "Record of the Year" and "Jazz Group of the Year" for his contribution on Julian Priester's "In Deep End Dance".
